An ever-evolving industry
Engineering is one of the key industries in Greater Lincolns, and as such a number of global companies choose the region as their base, knowing they’ll be accessing the finest knowledge and skills base available.
For example, BAE Systems is working with a team from RAF Coningsby to provide a guaranteed repair service for key Typhoon aircraft components. The contract supports the underlying principles behind the Government’s Defence Industrial Strategy by strengthening through-life support and ensuring continued retention of key skills in the UK.
Dynex Semiconductors has a purpose-built facility in the region, and global engineering company Siemens also has a base here. The appeal of the area is clear: the highly skilled workforce, complemented by a strong engineering focus in the local colleges and universities.
The University of Lincoln is to open a new School of Engineering in partnership with Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. Its focus of the School of Engineering will be industrial power and energy, a specialist area of Siemens. To date, there is no centre specifically focusing on this aspect of engineering, making the new venture a national innovation and real area of importance in the field of engineering.
Lincoln College is also leading the way in developing a highly trained engineering workforce. Its apprenticeships in most areas of the subject offer a diverse study timetable of on-the-job training and classroom teaching, with assessment balanced across both.
