Bringing together heritage and innovation
With a rich heritage in the farming and food-related industries, Greater Lincoln has continued the tradition of being a key player in these sectors. Around 30% of its workforce is employed in the agriculture, fishing and food industry, including distribution and hospitality. The region is home to Walkers Crisps, Moy Park, Sealord, Cherry Valley, an impressive list of big name players. Plus, the food manufacturing and processing industries’ supply chain extends to areas such as haulage, packaging and support services; creating around 50,000 county-wide jobs that each require a different skills set.
Another key area, common to many counties, is the public sector. There is a strong, skilled workforce for the diverse areas this sector encompasses, such as education and healthcare, with over 35% of people working in this or other service-related sectors. These are supported by the local educational institutions, for example Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln places a strong emphasis on education as a subject.
Greater Lincoln is also a leading region in the field of communication and technology. Lincolnshire was one of the first counties to have all of its telephone exchanges broadband enabled, plus the County Council Broadband Initiative worked with BT to roll out an advanced, symmetrical wireless broadband system.
