The perfect base for a highly trained workforce
Greater Lincoln is home to four RAF bases at Waddington, Cranwell, Scampton and Digby. In addition, RAF Coningsby, home to the new typhoon Eurofighter, is just outside the area.
Waddington is the base for the AWACS early warning surveillance aircraft whilst RAF Cranwell is the officer training equivalent of Sandhurst for the RAF. The presence of these bases means the area is blessed with a pool of highly skilled labour, whether as direct RAF personnel or the supporting civilian staff. Often these personnel have set up their own businesses in the area following their leaving the service.
Digby supports both strategic decision makers at the highest level and the front line on a 24/7 basis. Therefore, the station has to be able to adapt to an ever-changing security environment as well as constantly embracing technological change. Scampton provides air command and control in defence of the UK’s airspace. More visibly, it’s home to the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (better known as the Red Arrows). It also houses the majority of the RAF MMU, a Reserve Force Unit whose role is to provide meteorological services to armed forces personnel on operations throughout the world. As well as being exciting, and welcome, presences within the area, these RAF bases equip their staff with the highest possible skills.
